The sisal fiber grown in Kenya, also known as Agave, is an A. Sisalana specie and it is eminently a tropical plant. In this way, there are few commercial plantations outside this environment.
For being resistant to prolonged droughts and high temperatures, the sisal has adapted well to the semi-arid tropical climate of Kilifi, Makueni, TaitaTaveta, Baringo and Nakuru Counties.. In this region, the climate is warm and there is a great light intensity, which favors the development of the plant.
For this reason, these counties are the regions producing sisal in the whole country the most, since it presents the favorable conditions for the cultivation of sisal.
It is from the exploitation of the sisal leaf that originates the bulk of the hard fibers produced in the world and Kenya presents itself as of one of the world’s largest producer of this fiber, exceeding 25,000 tons per year.
